The left-wing opposition coalition, Concertaciόn, is fighting a rearguard action to preserve its credibility as the only political movement in Chile committed to social justice days before the start of the campaign for municipal elections on 28 October. Concertaciόn has been wrong-footed by the publication of the triennial socio-economic characterisation report (Casen) showing that poverty has fallen under the government of President Sebastián Piñera, whose ruling coalition includes the right-wing Unión Demócrata Independiente (UDI).
