EL SALVADOR: The US turns the screw

President Mauricio Funes held an unprecedented meeting for almost 10 hours in the presidential palace this week with presidents and secretaries general of the country’s six political parties. Funes is redoubling his efforts to try and find a short-term solution to the judicial paralysis in El Salvador as a result of the institutional deadlock between the constitutional chamber of the supreme court of justice (CSJ) and the legislative assembly. This was the first top-level meeting since the crisis began on 5 June – and it comes after US congressmen mooted cutting assistance to El Salvador.
