Danilo Medina took office in the Dominican Republic on 16 August promising both change and continuity. A significant factor in his decision-making so far however appears to be a desire not to cause upset within the ranks of his own Partido de la Liberación Dominicana (PLD) which owes much of its political success to Medina’s predecessor, Leonel Fernández (1996-2000; 2004-2012) who, after all, retains the party presidency. This adds to existing questions as to how far Medina will ultimately be able to assert his independence from his powerful predecessor and in-party rival.
