BRAZIL | Raking in the hoards of rifles. The public security secretariat (SSP) of Rio reports that between 1 January and 19 July, police in the state capital had seized 162 rifles, many of them AK-47s (plus 78 sub machine guns and machine guns). Between 2007 and 2009, the monthly average of rifle seizures had been 18.7; this year, with big occupations of favelas over, it shot up to 24.9. This compares with the national disarmament campaign, which, since May 2011, resulted in the collection of 57,000 firearms, of which only 214 (0.4%) were rifles.
