PERU: Has Sendero’s PR coup backfired?

Sendero Luminoso (SL)’s founder, Abimael Guzmán, and his wife, Elena Iparraguirre, could not have wished for a higher-profile event to mark their 20 years behind bars than an interview with The Economist. Something of the sort was published on 8 September and it made headlines in Peru — just after two episodes that reminded everyone that an SL faction is still fighting. What is not clear yet is whether the political capital will accrue to SL sympathisers that want to be recognised as a political party or to President Ollanta Humala, who wants to legislate against that possibility.
