ECUADOR: Correa takes cue from Chávez victory

Ecuador’s President Rafael Correa responded to the electoral victory of his Venezuelan peer Hugo Chávez by revealing for the first time his determination to seek re-election on 17 February next year. Correa, who took office in January 2007, will eclipse his icon Eloy Alfaro as the longest (consecutive) serving head of state in Ecuador’s history if he is returned to office as expected.
