Paraguay’s political Left has ruptured ahead of the presidential elections next April. Mario Ferreiro, the favourite to run on the ticket of the disparate left-wing coalition Frente Guasú (FG) which backed former president Fernando Lugo (2008-2012) has struck out on his own, taking with him about half of the 19 parties within it. Lugo followed up Ferreiro’s announcement this week by mooting, not for the first time, a tilt at the presidency himself. He argues that his impeachment in June denied him the possibility of completing his term and that, as a corollary, the constitutional bar on re-election is inapplicable and that he is eligible to stand.
