President Felipe Calderón’s hopes to end his term with his policies on public security and Mexico’s economic future fully vindicated have appeared to be on their way to fulfilment over the past couple of months. In September he was able to announce the “decapitation” of the Cartel del Golfo (CDG) criminal organisation and a major coup against Los Zetas. In early October he was able to follow up with the announcement of an oil find that promises a substantial increase in Mexico’s reserves, and the death of the top leader of Los Zetas — though the latter came with a sting in the tail.
