Despite the shadow of corruption scandals and a slowing economy this year, the ruling Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT) did well in the 7 October municipals. Its first round mayoral tally was 625, up from its existing 554, and it will contest a further 22 run-offs. The key result for the PT was in São Paulo, the country’s largest electoral district, where the poll favourite, Celso Russomano, was relegated to third spot, leaving his rivals from the PT and PSDB, Fernando Haddad and José Serra, to battle it out in a second round.
