It is becoming a familiar pattern. As was the case with the 2011 general election and 2008 municipal vote – the first election to take place since President Daniel Ortega took power in 2007 - the aftermath of the recent 4 November municipal vote, which saw Ortega’s Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN) take 134 of the country’s 153 municipalities [
WR-12-44], has been marred by allegations of fraud, deadly violence and major concerns by local civil society groups regarding the credibility of the electoral process. Ortega’s iron clad grip over the country, and the international community’s failure to follow up on any complaints suggests that as before, the results will stand.
