The Tres Marías incident, in which members of the Mexican federal police (PF) fired upon a US diplomatic vehicle in August last, injuring two US nationals and triggering tensions in US-Mexico bilateral relations [
RM-12-10] has claimed its first casualties. Last month, Mexico’s attorney general’s office (PGR) announced that it had charged 14 PF officers with attempted murder. The arrest of PF inspector general Juan Manuel Pacheco Salgado, also in relation to the incident, could throw up further embarrassment for the government of outgoing President Felipe Calderón.
