HONDURAS: Enter stage left Mrs Zelaya

Xiomara Castro was confirmed as the presidential candidate for the leftist political party Partido Libertad y Refundación (Libre) in primary elections on 18 November. Castro, the wife of ousted former president Manuel Zelaya (2006-2009) who will run for a seat in congress for Libre, won more votes than any single candidate competing in the elections, including the country’s two traditional parties – Partido Nacional (PN) and Partido Liberal (PL). Still, she will face an uphill battle to live up to Zelaya’s bold assertion that “Libre will break the political duopoly” when the presidential electoral campaign gets underway in earnest next year.
