BOLIVIA: Morales struggles with corruption

The executive led by President Evo Morales is facing one of its worst scandals since taking office in January 2006. The exposure of a corrupt “mafia” allegedly comprising top officials from several government ministries and the judiciary -  following claims by a US businessman that he was being targeted by them -  is raising uncomfortable questions for the president. Meanwhile the replacement of the country’s seventh national police chief in six years, as well as further evidence of the spread of international drug gangs in the country, points to continued security challenges.
