BOLIVIA: Serious about joining Mercosur

Bolivia is serious about joining the Southern Common Market (Mercosur) [RA-12-10]: this month it signed an accession protocol to the regional bloc, which comprises Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and Venezuela. The move is proving contentious locally, provoking a particularly strong reaction from the influential agri lobby, which is concerned about how this can mesh with Bolivia’s membership of the Andean Community of Nations (CAN), whose other members, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru, are the main markets for Bolivia’s agri output.
