BRAZIL: Mensalão guilty take office

While the conviction of 25 politicians in the mensalão scandal last year has strengthened the reputation of Brazil’s judiciary, the lenient treatment of many of the guilty has provoked widespread outrage. With the supreme court in recess until 1 February, some of those convicted have taken advantage of the legal limbo to carry on as normal. On 3 January José Genoíno, who as president of the ruling Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT) was sentenced to six years 11 months in prison for his part in the cash-for-votes scandal, took up his seat in congress.
