Letter-writing appears to feature high up on the list of President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner’s New Year’s resolutions. Since the start of 2013, she has published two; one designed to inflame nationalist sentiment, the other to dampen domestic criticism. First, she wrote a letter to the British Prime Minister, David Cameron, published in The Guardian and The Independent newspapers on 3 January, demanding that he negotiate over the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands (Malvinas). A few days later, she posted on Twitter a link to a letter written to the actor Ricardo Darín, which consisted of an angry response to a question he posed in a recent magazine interview regarding the origin of the Kirchners’ wealth.
