MEXICO: Zapatistas make comeback

The Ejército Zapatista de Liberación Nacional (EZLN) chose the end of an era to make a return with silent and peaceful demonstrations in the towns it violently took in 1994. On 21 December, the day that marked the end of the 13th Baktun, the Mayan word for the calendar cycle, and the start of the 14th, the EZLN staged large marches in the south-western state of Chiapas designed to symbolise its own renewal.
