Within two weeks of striking an agreement with the leaders of Mexico’s main parties to carry out a sweeping shake-up of the education system, President Enrique Peña Nieto was rewarded with congressional approval for his proposed reform. The powerful teachers’ union Sindicato Nacional de Trabajadores de la Educación (SNTE) had initially claimed to be in favour of any reform that improved the quality of education in Mexico.
