President Enrique Peña Nieto had barely completed his first month in office when a prominent newspaper proclaimed, ‘Violence is maintained with Peña Nieto: 982 executed’. The report thus headlined was about a 3.4% increase in the number of killings attributed to the drug gangs in December. It overshadowed another report on a survey which suggested that the perception of the public security situation had improved in the same month. Underlying this is one of the main challenges the Peña Nieto administration has acknowledged: the need for a credible portrayal of what is actually happening in Mexico.
