GUATEMALA: Homicides down for third year running

The public perception, fed by media coverage, is that Guatemala remains in the grip of growing violent crime. The fact is that 2012 was the third year running of a declining homicide rate. The lower rate, however, remains among the highest in Latin America — and the country is still far from having uprooted corruption, including involvement in crime, from the law enforcement agencies.
