BOLIVIA |
Strong first quarter growth. Bolivia’s economy & finance minister, Luis Arce, revealed on 29 May that the country’s economic growth in the first quarter of the year was 6.04% on the back of a strong performance from the hydrocarbon sector. Hydrocarbon production, the main driving force of the Bolivian economy, increased by 23% in the first four months of the year, according to Arce. In addition most sectors of the economy, including banking (6.7%,), transport (6.7%), construction (6.6%) and water & electricity (5.5%) posted strong growth figures for the quarter. In contrast the one sector that posted disappointing figures was mining, another traditionally important economic activity in Bolivia, which only increased by 0.67%. However, Arce pointed out that despite the low figure it was still positive as it came on the back of an 8% contraction in the sector in the previous quarter.
