VENEZUELA: Maduro blames police for kidnappings

More than 90% of all kidnappings carried out in Greater Caracas are orchestrated by corrupt police officers. This claim was made by none other than President Nicolás Maduro, speaking from the Miraflores palace this week alongside the military high command. It seemed like a startling admission, liable to dissolve any confidence at all that the public might have retained in the forces of law and order. But Maduro was playing his own game. When those kidnapped were rescued, Maduro said, investigations always ended up “pointing the finger” at the state police in Miranda, and the municipal police in Sucre and Baruta in Greater Caracas. All three electoral districts in question are in the hands of the opposition.
