DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: Medina charting new course on mining?

The government of President Danilo Medina denied permission this week to Falconbridge Dominicana (Falcondo), a local subsidiary of the Anglo-Swiss mining giant Glencore Xstrata, to explore a ferronickel site in Loma Miranda in the central province of La Vega. The decision was taken on environmental grounds. Coming less than a month after the government forced the Canadian mining firm Barrick Gold Corp. to renegotiate its concession for the country’s main gold mine, Pueblo Viejo, it explains why Medina’s popularity is so high, as he is seen as standing up to mining companies and governing in the public interest rather than personal political interest.
