President Raúl Castro turned 82 on 3 June. The birthday which received far more coverage in the Communist party mouthpiece Granma, however, was that of Gerardo Hernández Nordelo, ‘Hero of the Republic of Cuba’, who turned 48 on 4 June 1965. Hernández Nordelo is one of the Cuban five eulogised at every opportunity in the Cuban state press.
