CUBA: Gross and the Cuban five
President Raúl Castro turned 82 on 3 June. The birthday which received far more coverage in the Communist party mouthpiece Granma, however, was that of Gerardo Hernández Nordelo, ‘Hero of the Republic of Cuba’, who turned 48 on 4 June 1965. Hernández Nordelo is one of the Cuban five eulogised at every opportunity in the Cuban state press. Granma claimed that “Gerardo is carrying out in the US two life sentences and another 15 years for fighting against terrorism.” The ‘five’ were arrested in 1998 and convicted in 2001 of conspiring to commit murder, conspiring to spy, being undeclared foreign agents and carrying false documentation.
