ARGENTINA: Surprise reshuffle
In the first reshuffle of her second term in office, President Cristina Fernández announced changes to the defence and security portfolios on 30 May. As well as a change in personnel, the incoming appointees will have new responsibilities. Both ministries have come under attack in recent years: defence for poor budget management, and for failing to replace obsolete military equipment; security for its poor performance during April’s floods in La Plata and Buenos Aires, as well as its failure to tackle Argentina’s escalating crime rate.
