The mercurial Partido do Movimento Democrático Brasileiro (PMDB)
secured the role of kingmaker in the contest to succeed President Lula da Silva
in 2010 after winning the presidencies of both the senate and lower chamber of
congress earlier this week. The PMDB gained control over the voting agenda and
political discussions in congress as Lula anointed his chief of staff Dilma
Rousseff, of the ruling Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT), as his political
heiress. Meanwhile, the governor of São Paulo, José Serra, of the main
opposition Partido da Social Democracia Brasileira (PSDB), also secured his
