COLOMBIA: Santos ups the ante

President Juan Manuel Santos is leaving no stone unturned in his quest to conclude the peace process with the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Farc) before a potential re-election bid. Santos has announced that the government and members of the ruling coalition will push through congress a bill creating the means for a referendum to be held on a hypothetical peace accord with the Farc on the same day as either legislative elections on 9 March 2014 or presidential elections on 25 May 2014. He even said he would consider meeting the maximum leader of the Farc, ‘Timochenko’ (Rodrigo Londoño Echeverri) to accelerate the peace process.
