President Nicolás Maduro has denounced a conspiracy by Colombian mercenaries to assassinate him and the head of the national assembly, Diosdado Cabello. Maduro said that two ‘hitmen’ had been arrested. He has surpassed his predecessor and mentor, Hugo Chávez (1999-2012), in the number of alleged assassination plots, leading the opposition to issue its now-standard response that he is seeking to divert attention away from the parlous state of the economy and public security. More damaging to Maduro’s credibility, however, was his attempt shortly afterwards to dismiss the devastating explosion a year ago at the Amuay oil refinery, which claimed 47 lives, as “sabotage”. His government has failed to provide a shred of evidence for this claim let alone a detailed investigative report.End of preview - This article contains approximately 984 words.
