MEXICO: Peña Nieto mulls moving Informe amid protests

President Enrique Peña Nieto is thinking of changing “the format, date and time” of his first state-of-the-nation address (Informe) traditionally held on 1 September. Peña Nieto made the announcement after postponing a trip to Turkey scheduled for next week. Peña Nieto said that this had nothing to do with unrest in neighbouring Syria but was so that he could keep abreast of developments with crucial secondary legislation to his education reform. Protesters from Mexico’s second largest teachers’ union, the Coordinadora Nacional de Trabajadores de la Educación (CNTE), have brought parts of Mexico City to a standstill, forcing congress to delay voting on some of this legislation. CNTE leaders are ‘negotiating’ with deputies and senators but remain adamant that this will go hand in hand with ‘mobilising’: they are planning a disruptive march for 1 September.
