The government of President Sebastián Piñera is gearing up for serious protests in Chile to mark the 40
th anniversary since the coup which toppled former president Salvador Allende (1970-1973), and ushered in the dictatorship of General Augusto Pinochet (1974-1990) on 11 September 1973. The impending presidential elections on 17 November add extra resonance to the occasion: they pit against each other former president, Michelle Bachelet (2006-2010), and Evelyn Matthei, daughters of two friends and air force officers who suffered very different fates under the Pinochet regime after ending up on opposite sides.
