PERU: Project ‘prop up Humala’ launched

The government began its salvage operation this week to try and recover President Ollanta Humala’s rapidly dwindling popularity. Prime Minister Juan Jiménez Mayor entertained the first leaders of Peru’s opposition political parties. He said that the meetings were motivated by the need to engage in consensus-building after months of confrontation. Conscious that these meetings are only taking place because the government is perturbed about Humala’s popularity, individual parties have dusted off their wish lists. They are hoping to win backing for some long-cherished proposals in exchange for providing constructive cross-party dialogue to “consolidate the economic system”, a euphemism for buttressing Humala.
