Despite the Brazilian medical profession’s aversion to the government’s Mais Médicos programme, which involves the import of foreign doctors to remote areas lacking health care, a new opinion poll on the public’s reaction to the policy found an overwhelming majority in favour. Commissioned by the Confederação Nacional dos Transportes (CNT) and published on 10 September, the study, based on a sample of 2,002 respondents, found 73.9% supported the initiative. More than 40% of respondents described the quality of care currently provided by the Brazilian public health system as “terrible” or “bad.” Public support, however, has failed to prevent considerable teething problems with the policy.
