The 40th anniversary of the coup which ushered in the dictatorship of General Augusto Pinochet was always going to have a distinct electoral tinge with just over two months to go until the presidential and congressional contests. The need for “truth and justice” was a common thread in speeches delivered at separate events by President Sebastián Piñera and former president Michelle Bachelet (2006-2010), the presidential candidate for the left-wing Concertaciόn. But Bachelet went much further. She deftly drew a parallel between 1973 and now and the future direction she plans to take Chile’s democracy.
