EL SALVADOR: Gang truce under pressure

There is growing evidence that the mara gang truce in El Salvador is at best malfunctioning and at worst unravelling. On 5 September the authorities arrested 90 members of the M18 gang accused of homicide, extortion and illicit association in San Salvador and the suburban municipalities of Mejicanos and Ciudad Delgado. The very next day the US announced that it was withdrawing social development aid to these, and a further four, municipalities while investigating if funds were going towards projects benefiting mara gang members.
