It was not a damp squib but turnout for the ‘massive march’ organised by the radical leftist former presidential candidate, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, in Mexico City on 8 September to protest against the government’s energy reform proposal fell short of expectations. This will have come as a relief for President Enrique Peña Nieto after weeks of protests by restive teachers in the capital over his education reform, although Lόpez Obrador is promising more protests. Peña Nieto will also have been gratified by the positive reaction of Lόpez Obrador’s former party, the Partido de la Revolución Democrática (PRD), to the fiscal reform proposal he sent to congress on 8 September. This augurs well for the survival of his cross-party ‘Pacto por México’ political agreement, and suggests the PRD could be open to compromise over energy reform.
