The US National Security Adviser Susan Rice admitted in talks with Brazil’s foreign minister, Luiz Alberto Figueiredo, that the mounting allegations about the US National Security Agency (NSA)’s intelligence activities in Brazil “raise legitimate questions”. Rice hosted Figueiredo in Washington for talks on the matter after Brazil’s President Dilma Rousseff last week won a personal assurance from President Barack Obama that the White House would provide a full explanation about “everything”, including the suggestion that the NSA intercepted Rousseff’s personal communications and also breached internal communications networks at Brazil’s state oil company, Petrobras.
