POLITICS: Assembly approves Yasuní drilling

The national assembly voted decisively on 3 October in a 10-hour debate to approve President Rafael Correa’s decree to declare oil exploitation in two blocks in the Yasuní biosphere reserve to be “of national interest”. Correa insisted that the oil would be extracted responsibly and the resulting revenue used to combat poverty and spur development.
