Ecuador’s aborted penal reform reopens regional debate

The recent threat by Ecuador’s President Rafael Correa to resign if his Alianza País (AP) party votes in congress in favour of legal changes decriminalising abortion in specific circumstances has led to a reconsideration of the abortion debate and public attitudes in the region. Correa, who describes himself as a “left-wing catholic”, made the threat as Ecuador’s national assembly considered changes to the country’s penal code.
