Mexico’s political system will shortly undergo possibly its most substantive reform since the Mexican Revolution. Congress approved a significant politico-electoral reform bill before the end of the congressional session in December which, among other things, undoes one of the core tenets of the Revolution – no re-election. Under the electoral side of the reform, senators and mayors will be able to seek re-election for two consecutive terms from 2018; and federal and local deputies for four terms.
