EL SALVADOR: Funes spices up elections

The presidential election on 2 February has taken an unexpected twist with President Mauricio Funes going public with corruption allegations against former president Francisco Flores (1999-2004) for allegedly misappropriating millions of dollars of financial assistance from Taiwan. Flores had served as campaign adviser to the former mayor of San Salvador, Norman Quijano, the presidential candidate of the right-wing opposition Alianza Republicana Nacionalista (Arena). There is more at stake than just the electoral contest, with media speculation rife that El Salvador could jettison Taiwan for diplomatic ties with China, although this is overstated and is unlikely to occur if Arena returns to power.
