MEXICO: Splits raise doubts about self-defence groups

With accusations about collusion with organised crime flying in both directions, a split has taken place within the autodefensas of Tierra Caliente, which has led to the arrest of the movement’s leader, Hipólito Mora, on a charge of complicity in a double murder. In the mean time the autodefensas have been taking control of more municipalities in Michoacán with the obvious complaisance of the federal government. Elsewhere there have been clashes between rival autodefensa factions in Guerrero, while the government of Oaxaca has announced that it will stamp out attempts to form ‘community police’ groups in the state.
