BOLIVIA: Mining proves fresh challenge for Morales

A new mining bill has become the latest source of unrest for President Evo Morales and his Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS) government ahead of October’s general elections, after clashes between members of mining cooperatives (cooperativistas) and the police left two miners dead. President Morales has acted swiftly, replacing his mining minister and pulling the bill – which was three years in the pipeline and is considered key to boosting the sector. However this has yet to placate what remains a key plank of Morales’ support base.
