Mobilising to protect the World Cup. Justice minister José Eduardo Cardozo announced on 23 May that about 100,000 police officers and 57,000 members of the military would be deployed during the Fifa World Cup across the 12 cities hosting the matches. He noted that more than 13,000 police officers had undergone special training in recent months to act during demonstrations, and that a special protocol had been adopted to present ‘any abuses or violence, from either demonstrators or police.’ The government, he said, was spending about US$863m on security during the event — some of it on ‘less lethal’ weapons, high-definition surveillance cameras and intelligence equipment.
