EL SALVADOR: As Funes steps down, violence peaks again

From 1 June El Salvador has a new president, Salvador Sánchez Cerén, and a new minister of justice and public security, former congressman Benito Lara — who sees his first task as finding out who is responsible for the surge of violence this year, which threatens to undo the improvement achieved over the first two years of ‘truce’ between the main street gangs (maras). Lara’s predecessor, Ricardo Perdomo, has blamed the maras and, behind them, the drug-traffickers.
