VENEZUELA: Opposition radicals risk playing into government hands

The uncertain fate of the radical opposition leader, Leopoldo López, and the government’s apparent unwillingness to reach a political compromise with the main opposition alliance Mesa de la Unidad Democrática (MUD), has left the moderate MUD leadership stuck in a corner and has re-energised the radical wing. Arguably, this is what the government wants – a bitter and polarised political scenario suits its purposes and allows it to galvanise support against a common enemy.
