ECONOMY: Curtain falls on HydroAysén project

Environment Minister Pablo Badenier announced that a ministerial committee had voted to permanently cancel the US$3.2bn HydroAysén mega dam project, citing continued environmental and social concerns. The announcement is not a huge surprise; during her presidential election campaign last year Michelle Bachelet said that the project, first presented in 2007, was not viable in its present form. Yet, the new government is under pressure already to address the country’s soaring energy deficit.
