Chile’s Bachelet faces defining challenges

Chile’s President Michelle Bachelet completed her first 100 days in power with a flourish by signing a bill to create a state-run pension fund as an alternative to the country’s private pension funds (AFPs). Bachelet said that she had completed 91% of the 56 goals she undertook to carry out during this traditional honeymoon period as a signal of her government’s intent to start as it means to go on with significant structural changes to reduce socio-economic inequality in Chile and increase public participation. But it was what happened shortly after those first 100 days which will have the biggest impact on her legacy, involving Chile’s indigenous and education reform.
