REGION: Floods take heavy toll in the Río de la Plata basin

The month of June saw the worst yet of the heavy floods that have plagued the Río de la Plata basin in recent months. The intense rains affecting northern Argentina, Paraguay and the Brazilian state of Paraná since April have led to a steady rise in the water levels of the four major rivers (Iguazú, Paraná, Paraguay and Uruguay) that make up the large hydrological area, with the flooding causing extensive damage to buildings, infrastructure and crops.
