POLITICS: New congress poised to discuss peace

Colombia’s national congress began its new legislative session on 20 July, the first to feature the legislators elected in the March legislative elections [RA-14-03]. Following President Juan Manuel Santos’s re-election last month, the new legislature is now poised to go about setting in place the legal foundations necessary for sealing peace deals with the country’s leftist guerrillas as Santos vowed to do in his new term [RA-14-06]. Achieving this will depend, in no small part, on the ability of the newly elected congressional leadership to steer the legislative peace agenda through congress. Yet, in a move that has raised a few eyebrows the ruling coalition has elected two largely inexperienced legislators to head up both the senate and the chamber of deputies for the next twelve months.
