On 9 July a Caracas court ordered that the sacked opposition mayor of the western border town of San Cristóbal, Daniel Ceballos, face trial on charges of rebellion and conspiracy for his role during the mass anti-government protests that erupted in Venezuela in February. Meanwhile Leopoldo López, the leader of the radical opposition party Voluntad Popular which is accused by the government of stoking the violent protests as part of efforts to force the resignation (‘La Salida’) of President Nicolás Maduro, has been held in solitary confinement in the Ramo Verde military prison outside Caracas since mid-February and is due to face trial, potentially in August, on charges of conspiracy, the incitement of crime, arson and property damage.
